Since its beginning, Alaska Christian Ministry To Seafarers (ACMS) has followed what we call the “George Mueller Principle”. Mueller, a pastor in the 1800’s, opened then directed several orphanages in England which provided shelter and education for about 10,000 orphans. To raise funding for these schools, Mueller determined never to ask people for donations. Instead, ministry staff consistently and fervently prayed that the Lord would meet their daily requirements. He and his staff would let others know about specific institutional needs, but he refused to turn the ministry’s confidence away from God’s provision to “arms of Flesh” (i.e. Soliciting help from fellow citizens). God answered his prayers for over fifty years.
ACMS believes this principle is biblical. God promises provision to Christian organizations and believers who are engaged in ministries of service to others. Paul affirmed to the church in Philippi, as they provided his needs, that God would “supply all your needs (directly or indirectly) according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:19). Similarly, to the church in Corinth, he wrote, “And God is able to make all grace abound to you so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed” (2 Cor. 9:8). We are confident that God is willing and able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond at that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us”, for His glory (Eph. 3:20).
Moreover, we have seen God supply all our needs in response to prayer. Our staff praises and thanks to Him for His many wonderful gifts over the years. Two decades ago, the International Transport Foundation provided ACMS a grant, enabling our purchase of a facility in Seward that became a “home away from home” for cruise ship crew members. A cruise line company later graciously provided a van that we still use to transport crew from the docks in Seward, Whittier, and Anchorage to our facilities and/or other local destinations, then back to their ships. One Anchorage family for years mixed and sent us batter for innumerable chocolate cookies served daily to our seafarer visitors. Gracious donors have given us clothing to pass along to those in need, fresh fish, meat, soup and vegetables for meals; furniture and new cabinets, annual facility cleaning and maintenance assistance, and vehicle fuel. And each year, volunteers come at their own expense to serve this Mission. Our Executive Director Scott Johnson is ACMS only employee.
We share what we have been given with others. Currently, we have a need for (i) a van to replace one with almost 200,000 miles on it; (ii) Seward furnace repair or replacement; (iii) foreign language Bibles, discipleship materials, and videos; (iv) and food for volunteers and visiting crew members.
